Starting November 1, 2024, New South Wales (NSW) will roll out a significant battery rebate program aimed at encouraging homeowners and businesses to invest in battery storage systems. This initiative is part of the broader Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS), which seeks to lower electricity demand during peak usage times and promote renewable energy adoption across the state.
Understanding the Battery Rebate
The rebate comprises two main components, with the Peak Reduction Certificates (PERKs) being the most beneficial for those installing new battery systems. For every 100 watts (or 0.1 kW) of peak reduction capacity, one PERK will be awarded. This translates into substantial savings for various battery models, such as:
- • Approximately $1,600 for an 11 kW BYD four-stack battery.
- • Around $2,000 for a Tesla Powerwall 2, which offers 13.5 kWh of storage.
- • Roughly $1,400 for the Sunro 9.6 kW SPR.
How to Apply for the Rebate
To take advantage of the rebate, homeowners must collaborate with an accredited installer. An application form is completed between the installer and the homeowner, detailing the specific battery to be installed from an approved list. It’s essential to have internet access to complete the application.
This financial year, approximately 8 million PERKs will be available, equating to around 7,300 battery installations statewide when distributed across average installations like the Tesla Powerwall 2.
Key Details:
- • The rebate is applicable for retrofitting batteries to existing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems but does not apply to existing battery installations.
- • The rebate supports installations of up to 28 kWh, allowing for significant savings—potentially up to $4,000 for larger systems.
Benefits of Battery Installation
Installing a battery system offers numerous advantages:
- • Users can reduce their electricity bills by storing excess solar energy for use during peak hours.
- • By using stored energy, households help decrease demand during high-pressure periods on the grid.
- • Battery systems provide backup power during outages, enhancing energy security.
We are thrilled about the launch of this battery rebate. With many clients eagerly awaiting this opportunity, now is the perfect time to consider adding battery storage to your solar system. The technology not only helps to combat rising electricity costs but also empowers homeowners to generate and store their own energy.
