The new AS4777.1 solar installation standards have dropped and there is a large impact for grid protection. The new standard AS/NZS 4777.1:2024 supersedes AS/NZS 4777.1:2016, while the existing 2016 edition will remain current for the six month transitional period, after which AS/NZS 4777.1:2024 must be used. The new standard removes the requirement for network protection under 200kW.
DNSPs
DNSPs have not provided any guidance on their requirements as of yet and it is expected that they will update their network standard for embedded generation to reflect the new changes over the next six months. DNSPs often have a higher level of requirements than are detailed in the standard so we will have to wait and see what is specified. It’s expected that any projects that have current connection applications will need to be consistent with the design that has been submitted.
Connecting More Solar PV to the Grid
Removing the <200kW grid protection burden is good news for Australia, as it means that systems will be more cost effective and faster to install, and allow Australia to roll out solar projects at an increased rate. This helps us clean up our electricity network and reduce our carbon emissions in the fight against climate change. We have enjoyed helping solar installers and retailers navigate the varied requirements of the DNSPs and Australian Standards to get their system connected to the grid with ease. Hopefully our customers can consider us for our other industry leading products such as Main Switchboards, EV Charging Switchboards and Medium Voltage Panels for Solar Farms as we integrate more clean energy into the grid.
Grid Protection >200kW
Large scale grid protection is getting more complicated. Many DNSPs ask for SCADA connections over DNP3 or Modbus, CT chambers, Generator Monitoring (GMM) so that the DNSP can control and monitor larger systems on the grid. We have deep experience dealing with these requirements including programming PLCs and RTUs, to meet the remote access requirements of the DNSPs, so don’t hesitate to reach out for support on your projects. The new standard is available on the Standards Australia webpage.
